  • Update on the "Out of the Ashes" Fundraiser that happened the night of August 19, 2006

On Saturday, August 19 "The Friends of The Viking Carena Society" hosted a Fundraising Extravaganza. After a few smaller local fundraising events it was felt that a larger event was necessary to raise awareness as well as get the entire community behind our cause. The community of Viking and surrounding area came through with flying colors as the entire event was a success. The event was sold out and after releasing a few more tickets the attendance was 368. The focal point of the evening was a combination of silent and live auction. Items for the auction were donated by local businesses and individuals. The support in this area was unbelievable as approximately 110 items were up for auction. Items included anything from a Town of Viking lot, numerous collectables, trips as well as farm and home items.

The evening began with some welcoming comments followed by some very impressive corporate donations from local and surrounding area businesses. The entertainment as well as auctioneering was provided by Danny Hooper who unique brand of humour had people laughing all night long. In the end the sum of approximately $375,000.00 was raised which is a tremendous accomplishment for a town of 1,100 people. The money was raised from a combination of corporate donations, auction proceeds, cash donations, liquor sales, 50/50 and finally the sale of square footage in the new building. The organizing committee would like to thank all volunteers who helped with the event. In addition, a big thank you!; to the all the donors who made the evening such a huge fundraising success. We all are eagerly anticipating the day when the first skate hits the ice in the new Viking Carena.
